Subject: [csda] Hazard of Granulated Tires Used on Play Grounds with Adhesive as Artificial Turf

Dear Friends,

The German Environmental Health Initiative (DUGI), a public interest group, writes today below that a child has developed severe MCS after playing on a playground made of granulated tires covered with adhesive.  They ask for any information we may have about its toxicity.

I know that the U.S. National Park Service has used ground tires in adhesive for building walkways over the Anacostia River at Kenilworth Gardens in Washington, DC.  I also know that whole tires discarded into the ocean in hopes that fish would grow in them have been a failure in that fish do not like them.  One hypothesis is that this is due to toxic materials emanating from the tires.  I believe the City of New York has information on this, as would the New York and U.S. Environmental Protection Agencies.  Any information we have, or can obtain, would be helpful to those in Germany who are trying to remediate this problem.  It also may be a problem in the U.S.  Please send a copy of data you have to <info@dugi-ev.de>

Gratefully,
Larry

Sehr geehrter Herr Muthorst,

Hello Mr. Fonfara, for our discussion tomorrow early here already information (letter at FR) first. Cordial greetings [U.] [B.] miner [U.] [B.] miner [V.], the 31.10.06 at that outer ones 34 [postal code removed] [V.] [F.] round rundschau attn. Mr. Muthorst Parkstr. [postal code removed] [V.] Copy on: Office charcoal burner Mr. Dieter Peter Mr. Joerg treasure Mr. Volker Wetzel Mr. M. Palmy Dear Mr. Muthorst, to 30.10.06 was delivered on the sports field mass home of 20 bags with 1000 kilograms each of MRH Gummigranulat type W2570. The granulates comes from the company Muelsener recycling and commercial company ltd.. The company converts scrap tires to rubber granulates. The rubber granulates is to be built into a flexible base made of PU plastic suburb into the [M.]er artificial turf place. We had already spoken our doubts in the summer 2005 regarding recycling rubber opposite Mr. Schatz and Mr. Peters: , one can experience tire rubber and others at the Federal Office for Environment Protection, exhibits nearly always high concentrations at krebserregenden hydrocarbons (Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons). Recyceltes rubber granulates does not offer a warranty regarding the quality. It can endanger the groundwater by lead, cadmium, zinc, mercury and many chemicals. Its fine types of dust are toxic! In discussions with Mr. Peters and the landscape architect us it was communicated to Mr. Koehler that only new rubber is used. Now waste rubber is delivered. The landscape architect's office charcoal burner persists in the fact that the material is bound harmless in PU. That is however not like that: With the installation of the granulates rubber fine types of dust become free, which load the entire environment of the place including children's playground at that outer ones with fine dust (this was communicated in writing from the work Polytex). The rubber granulates is shifted with solvent, in order to bind it into the PU layer. With this process develop chemical compounds, which do not probably even know the manufacturers. On the PU Gummischicht an adhesive is laid on, which connects the artificial turf lining with the layer. It will give also here chemical compounds, whose effect one does not know reliably. We are not determined as adjacent residents, the installation of scrap tire granulates add! By the city administration and the architect's office charcoal burner we see ourselves deceived, since one does not inform us about the installation of the recycling material into the PU layer, but spoke with all telephone calls only about EPDM Neugranulat. We find amazing that the lower water protection authority permits the installation of such a material in the catchment area of the Hassia well and the proximity of the Erlenbachs. It is also here questionably, whether the authority knows, what it permitted.
